Bride’s Fingers is a traditional dessert that has been enjoyed for generations, particularly in the Levant region. It is a popular sweet dish served after Ramadan iftar. Known for its delightful taste and ease of preparation, its ingredients are often readily available at home, making it a go-to dessert for many households. Below are the ingredients and steps to prepare this delicious treat.
Ingredients for Bride’s Fingers:
- ¼ cup liquid milk.
- 1½ cups all-purpose white flour.
- ¼ cup vegetable oil.
- 1 egg.
- ¼ cup sugar.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- 1 teaspoon baking powder.
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice.
- A suitable amount of simple syrup (qater) or honey (as preferred).
- Vegetable oil for frying (as needed).
- Optional garnish: crushed pistachios or shredded coconut.
Steps to Prepare Bride’s Fingers:
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a deep mixing bowl, combine the egg and vegetable oil. Whisk thoroughly.
- Add sugar, liquid milk, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and baking powder to the bowl. Mix well until the ingredients are fully blended.
- Gradually add the flour to the mixture while stirring continuously with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.
- Cover the dough with a cloth or place it in a bag and let it rest for 10 minutes.
2. Fry the Dough:
- Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium heat until hot.
- Transfer the dough to a piping bag (or a sturdy plastic bag) and cut a small hole at the tip.
- Squeeze out 5 cm (2-inch) lengths of dough, cutting them off as they emerge, and carefully drop them into the hot oil.
- Fry the dough pieces until golden brown, then remove them and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
3. Add the Syrup or Honey:
- Once the fried dough has cooled slightly, drizzle cold syrup or honey over the pieces. Alternatively, dip the fried pieces into cold syrup briefly and remove them immediately.
- Garnish with crushed pistachios or shredded coconut, if desired.
Optional Variation:
- Divide the dough into two portions. Roll each portion into a thin sheet and fill with Kiri cheese or any cream cheese. Roll the dough into a log, cut into finger-sized pieces, and proceed to fry them as above. Add syrup or honey to finish.
