Potato Croquettes – A Crispy and Creamy Delight

Potato Croquettes are a delicious and easy-to-make dish that showcases the versatility of the beloved potato (known as batata in some Arabic-speaking countries). As one of the world’s most widely cultivated and consumed crops—ranking fourth after wheat, rice, and corn—potatoes are celebrated for their rich flavor and impressive nutritional profile.

With 100 grams of potatoes providing 87 calories, along with essential vitamins and minerals, they’re a hearty and wholesome choice for all ages.

Today, we’ll explore how to prepare crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside potato croquettes, a recipe perfect for snacks, side dishes, or even a light dinner.

🥔 Ingredients:

Potato Croquettes

  • 1 kg of potatoes

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs (or finely ground rusks or crackers)

  • 2 cups of vegetable oil for frying

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp paprika (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tsp black pepper

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Boil the Potatoes:
Place the potatoes in a pot and cover them with water. Boil over medium-high heat until fully cooked and tender.

  2. Peel and Mash:
Drain and peel the potatoes while still warm. Mash thoroughly until smooth—no lumps should remain.

  3. Season the Mash:
Add salt, black pepper, and paprika to the mashed potatoes. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

  4. Shape the Croquettes:
Using your hands, form the mixture into finger-shaped cylinders (or any shape you prefer). Place them on a tray and refrigerate for at least 1 hour until firm.

  5. Prepare the Coating Station:

    • Beat the eggs in a shallow bowl.

    • Place the flour in a separate wide dish.

    • Pour the breadcrumbs into another dish.

  6. Heat the Oil:
Pour the vegetable oil into a deep frying pan and heat over high heat.

  7. Coat and Fry:

    • Take a chilled croquette and roll it in flour, coating it evenly.

    • Dip it into the beaten egg, then roll it in breadcrumbs.

    • Fry in the hot oil, turning as needed, until golden brown on all sides.

  8. Drain and Serve:
Remove the croquettes and place them on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve hot with a side of green salad, garlic mayo, or spicy ketchup.

  • For a heartier meal, pair with grilled chicken or a bowl of soup.

Potato croquettes are crispy, creamy, and comforting—perfect for family gatherings or as a party appetizer.
