Bird Tongue Sweets – Ingredients and Preparation Method
Bird Tongue Sweets are a delicious treat often served after main meals and as a special offering during family gatherings or large events. The name comes from their unique shape, which resembles the tongue of a bird.
In this article from the cooking website Arabi Cook (Arabicook.com), we’ll share the ingredients and preparation method for these delightful sweets.
Ingredients for Bird Tongue Sweets:
- 1 cup of flour
- 1.5 cups of sliced almonds
- ½ teaspoon of baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
- ½ cup (or 1 stick) of melted butter
- ¼ cup of rose water
- Corn oil for frying
- Honey or syrup, as desired
- For decoration: roasted pistachios, almonds, or sesame seeds
Preparation Method:
Prepare the Dough:
- In a food processor, combine the baking powder, flour, sugar, and almonds. Blend on medium speed for about a minute until the almonds are finely ground.
- Slowly add the melted butter through the opening of the processor, then gradually add the rose water until a crumbly dough forms.
- If the dough holds together, there’s no need to add more rose water. If it remains crumbly, add more rose water in small amounts until the dough is cohesive.
- Roll the dough on a floured surface and knead it until smooth. Place the dough in a large bowl, cover it with a cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rest for 60 minutes.
Form the Sweets:
- Divide the dough into small balls, then roll each ball into a thin disk.
- Heat a skillet over high heat and place the dough disk on it for a few seconds, flipping it to cook both sides until golden.
- Mix some flour with water in a bowl to create a glue-like paste. Lightly brush the dough disk with this mixture and roll it into a finger-like shape. Repeat until all the dough is used.
- Cut each rolled piece into slices resembling a bird’s tongue.
Fry the Sweets:
- Heat the corn oil in a skillet.
- In a large bowl, prepare a mixture of honey or syrup.
- Fry the bird tongue slices in the hot oil, turning them until they achieve a golden color.
- Once fried, dip the pieces into the honey or syrup mixture and coat them well.
Serving:
- Place the coated sweets on a serving dish and garnish with sesame seeds or roasted nuts like pistachios or almonds.
Your Bird Tongue Sweets are now ready to be served! Enjoy these crispy, sweet treats as a delightful end to any meal.
