This recipe serves 3 people.
Ingredients for Broccoli Gratin:
- 1 whole broccoli, chopped into florets
- 3 tablespoons of flour
- 2 heaping tablespoons of butter
- 300 ml (1½ cups) of hot milk
- 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
- 4 heaping tablespoons of breadcrumbs
- ½ teaspoon of nutmeg
- Salt, to taste
- ½ teaspoon of black pepper
How to Prepare Broccoli Gratin:
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Cook the Broccoli: Boil the broccoli in a pot of water for about 10 minutes until tender. Once done, drain the water and season the broccoli with salt and black pepper.
Prepare the Béchamel Sauce: In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and stir continuously to avoid lumps. After 2 minutes, gradually add the hot milk while whisking. Season the sauce with a pinch of black pepper, salt, and ½ teaspoon of nutmeg. Keep stirring until the sauce thickens slightly.
Assemble the Gratin: Grease an oven dish with butter. Spread a layer of béchamel sauce on the bottom of the dish. Place the cooked broccoli florets neatly on top of the sauce. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the broccoli. Pour the remaining béchamel sauce over the cheese and broccoli, then spread the remaining cheddar cheese evenly on top. Finally, sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top layer.
Bake the Gratin: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes. After that, turn on the broiler for a few minutes to brown the top.
Serve: In a flat serving dish, place a generous portion of the hot and delicious broccoli gratin. It pairs wonderfully with a side of crispy French fries.
