Caramel Custard (Crème Caramel) – Ingredients and Preparation Method
Caramel custard, or Crème Caramel, is a delightful dessert that is easy to prepare and loved by both kids and adults alike. This dessert can be made effortlessly with simple ingredients that are often available in most Arab kitchens. However, it is important to note that Crème Caramel is not suitable for those with diabetes due to its high sugar content. Below, we will guide you through the preparation process.
Ingredients for Crème Caramel
Caramel Layer:
- 5 tablespoons of sugar
Custard Layer:
- 6 eggs
- 5 pieces of soft cheese squares (like cream cheese)
- 5 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 5 cups of milk
Preparation Method
1. Making the Caramel
- Place the sugar in a medium-sized saucepan and spread it evenly.
- Heat the pan on the stove until the sugar melts and turns golden brown. Stir it slightly to ensure an even color.
- Pour the caramel evenly into the bottom of the baking dish, spreading it out, and let it cool completely.
2. Preparing the Custard Mixture
- In a large glass bowl, combine the 6 eggs, cheese squares, sugar, vanilla, and milk.
- Use a mixer to blend the ingredients until smooth. If a mixer is not available, you can mix them manually, but ensure the ingredients are well combined.
- Remove any foam that forms on the surface of the mixture to achieve a smooth texture.
3. Cooking in a Water Bath
- Pour the custard mixture over the cooled caramel layer in the baking dish.
- To cook the custard, place the dish in a larger pan filled with hot water, filling the larger pan about a quarter of the way up the sides of the baking dish (as shown in the reference image if available).
4. Baking the Crème Caramel
- Place both pans in the oven and set it to 170°C (338°F) with the fan on.
- Bake for 80 minutes.
5. Cooling the Crème Caramel
- After baking, remove the Crème Caramel from the oven and let it cool for 20 minutes at room temperature.
- Then, refrigerate it for at least 2 hours to set properly.
6. Serving the Crème Caramel
- Once chilled, run a knife around the edges of the custard to loosen it from the dish.
- Briefly warm the bottom of the dish over the stove to slightly melt the caramel, which will help it release more easily.
- Flip the dish onto a serving platter, allowing the caramel to flow over the top.
This is a simple yet delicious recipe for making Crème Caramel with ingredients readily available in most homes. Enjoy your homemade treat!
