Ingredients for Chinese Sesame Balls:

Chinese Sesame Balls

  • For the Filling:

    • 40 grams of split mung beans (moong dal), peeled (or substitute with beans of your choice)
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 3 cups (850 ml) of water
    • 1 cup of sugar
    • ¼ cup of vegetable oil
  • For the Dough:

    • 1 sweet potato
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
    • 2 tablespoons ground white rice
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • A pinch of salt
    • ¼ cup powdered sugar
    • ½ cup sesame seeds

Preparation Method:

  1. Prepare the Filling:

    • Soak the mung beans in water overnight in a medium-sized bowl.
    • The next day, cook the beans in a pot with 1.5 cups of water over medium heat until tender.
    • Just before the beans finish cooking, add the sugar and vanilla, stirring well. Allow the mixture to simmer on low heat.
    • Once done, add the vegetable oil, stir to combine, and let the mixture cool.
    • Use a food processor or blender to grind the mixture into a smooth consistency, then shape into small balls. Place the balls in the fridge while preparing the dough.
  2. Prepare the Dough:

    • Cook the sweet potato, mash it, and let it cool.
    • In a separate bowl, combine the cornstarch, ground rice, baking powder, salt, and powdered sugar. Mix well.
    • Add the mashed sweet potato to the dry ingredients and gradually add warm water, kneading the mixture into a smooth dough. Let the dough rest for one hour.
  3. Assemble the Sesame Balls:

    • Divide the dough into medium or small balls, depending on your preference.
    • Flatten each dough ball and place a chilled filling ball inside. Close the dough around the filling, shaping it into a smooth, round ball.
    • Roll each ball in sesame seeds until fully coated.
  4. Fry the Sesame Balls:

    • Heat vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat. Fry the sesame balls until they turn golden brown.
    • Remove the balls from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Your delicious Chinese Sesame Balls are now ready to be served. Enjoy this crispy, sweet treat with your loved ones, and savor every bite!
