Date Basbousa – Recipe and Preparation Method
Date basbousa is a delicious dessert known for its rich flavor and high nutritional value. It’s easy to prepare, requiring only ten minutes for preparation and thirty minutes for baking. - 1 cup pitted dates, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup semolina
- 1 cup drinking water
- 1/2 cup powdered milk
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon rose water
- 1/2 cup sugar
For the Syrup (Qatar):
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup drinking water
- 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon orange blossom water
- 1 teaspoon rose water
For Garnishing:
- Crushed almonds (as desired)
For Greasing the Pan:
- 2 tablespoons tahini
Preparation Method:
Preparing the Syrup:
- In a saucepan, combine sugar and water over medium heat. Allow the mixture to boil and thicken slightly (about 4 to 5 minutes after boiling).
- Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice, orange blossom water, and rose water. Mix well and set aside to cool completely.
Preparing the Basbousa:
In a blender, combine chopped dates, semolina, vegetable oil, powdered milk, rose water, and baking powder. Blend until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
Grease a suitable baking pan with tahini. Pour the basbousa mixture into the pan, smoothing the top. Sprinkle crushed almonds on top.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Once heated, bake the basbousa for about 30 minutes until it is cooked through and golden brown.
Remove the pan from the oven and immediately pour the cold syrup over the hot basbousa.
Allow it to cool slightly before cutting into desired shapes and transferring to a serving dish.
