Granita – How to Make Italian Granita Dessert
Granita is a semi-frozen Italian dessert made from fresh fruit and water. It originated in Sicily but has become popular throughout Italy in a variety of flavors and colors. What makes this dessert unique is that it's not limited to just fruit; you can customize it with your favorite flavors. It is one of the most refreshing treats in Sicily, especially during the summer. It's commonly enjoyed with Sicilian pastries, often in coffee or lemon flavors, and contains no added calories.
How to Prepare Mocha Coffee Granita:
Ingredients for the Coffee:
- 160 ml of mocha coffee
- 20 grams of sugar
- 85 ml of water
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Ingredients for the Mocha Coffee Mix:
- 1 cup of powdered milk
- 1 cup of creamer
- ½ cup of cocoa powder
- ¼ cup of instant coffee (Nescafé)
- Sugar to taste
How to Make Mocha Coffee:
- Mix the dry ingredients together: powdered milk, cocoa powder, instant coffee, creamer, and sugar.
- Boil water and add 3 tablespoons of the mocha mix for every cup. Stir well until fully dissolved. The mocha coffee is now ready.
How to Prepare Mocha Coffee Granita:
- Prepare the mocha coffee and pour it into a large container to cool.
- In a deep pot, bring water to a boil and add the sugar. Let it dissolve completely before removing from heat.
- Combine the cooled coffee with the sugar-water mixture and stir well.
- Pour the mixture into a tightly sealed jar and place it in the freezer for at least 6 hours, stirring every hour.
- After freezing, allow it to soften for 30 minutes.
- Serve the granita in glass cups and garnish with whipped cream and grated chocolate if desired.
How to Prepare Lemon Granita:
Ingredients:
- 1 liter of lemon juice
- 100 grams of white sugar
- Mint leaves for garnish
Preparation:
- Pour the lemon juice into a pitcher and stir in the sugar until dissolved, then refrigerate until fully chilled.
- Once cooled, pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container and place it in the freezer for about 2 hours.
- Use a fork to break up the mixture into icy chunks, then return it to the freezer for another 20 minutes. Repeat this process once or twice until the lemon juice forms small ice crystals.
- Scoop the lemon granita into cups or bowls and garnish with a few mint leaves before serving.
