Main Ingredients for Kafta and Potato Casserole:

Kafta and Potato Casserole

  • 6 large potatoes
  • 5 large tomatoes
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 tablespoon of mixed spices
  • 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of dried marjoram
  • ½ cup of olive oil

Kafta Ingredients:

  • 500 grams of minced meat
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup of finely chopped parsley
  • 1 cup of water (or tomato juice as preferred)

Preparation Method:

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Wash and peel the potatoes, then slice them thinly. Wash the tomatoes and slice them as well. Peel the onion and slice it into thin wedges.

  2. Mix the Spices: In a medium-sized bowl, mix the spices: mixed spices, cinnamon, turmeric, salt, black pepper, and dried marjoram. Stir well with a wide plastic spoon until all ingredients are well combined.

  3. Prepare the Kafta: In a large, deep bowl, combine the minced meat, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, and parsley. Mix everything together using your fingertips until you have a smooth kafta mixture.

  4. Assemble the Casserole: In a baking tray, arrange the potato slices at the bottom and sprinkle some of the spice mix over them. Layer half of the sliced onions on top, sprinkle with more spices, and then add half of the kafta mixture, spreading it evenly over the potatoes and onions. Layer half of the tomato slices on top and sprinkle with more spices.

  5. Continue Layering: Add another layer of onions over the tomatoes, then spread the remaining kafta mixture evenly on top. Cover the surface with the remaining tomato slices.

  6. Bake: Drizzle olive oil over the tomato slices, then pour water or tomato juice (as preferred). Cover the baking tray with aluminum foil. Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F), place the tray on the middle rack, and bake for 60 minutes.

  7. Finish Cooking: Once the kafta is fully cooked, remove the tray from the oven, take off the foil, and return it to the oven for about 7 minutes to brown the top.

Your Kafta and Potato Casserole is now ready to serve. We hope you enjoy this tasty dish!
