Makroud El-Louz – Ingredients and Cooking Method
Makroud El-Louz is one of the most famous traditional sweets in Algeria. It’s a delicious treat, especially popular during large celebrations and holidays. This sweet is quick and easy to prepare, making it a favorite for festive occasions.
Here’s how to make Makroud El-Louz.
Ingredients for Makroud El-Louz
- 1 kg of almonds
- 500 grams of sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 large tablespoon of lemon zest
- 5 large tablespoons of rose water
- Powdered sugar for garnish
For the Syrup (Qater):
- 2 cups of water
- 4 cups of sugar
- 2 drops of lemon juice
Cooking Method for Makroud El-Louz
Grind the Almonds:
- Finely grind the almonds until they become a powder.
Mix the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the ground almonds with sugar by hand to ensure the sugar is evenly distributed.
- Add rose water, eggs, and lemon zest to the mixture and knead the dough by hand until it becomes soft and pliable.
Shape the Dough:
- Roll the dough into long cylindrical shapes (rulls) and cut the rolls into small pieces about 3 cm in length using a knife.
Prepare for Baking:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Sprinkle a little flour on a baking tray, then arrange the cut pieces of dough neatly on the tray.
Bake:
- Place the tray in the middle rack of the oven and bake for about 10 minutes at 180°C. The makroud should hold its shape, but the color will remain unchanged.
Prepare the Syrup (Qater):
- In a pot, combine the sugar and water and bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Add the lemon juice and let the syrup boil until thickened. Remove from heat and let it cool.
Dip the Makroud:
- Once the baked makroud pieces have cooled, dip them in the cooled syrup.
Garnish with Powdered Sugar:
- After dipping in syrup, roll each piece in powdered sugar until fully coated. Repeat for all the pieces.
Serve:
- Arrange the Makroud El-Louz on a serving plate and enjoy.
