Onion tart is a vegetarian dish that can be served for lunch or dinner. It is distinguished by its unique taste and the high vitamin content found in onions, which benefit the body and provide energy throughout the day. It is especially popular among vegetarians who do not consume any type of meat.
This recipe is easy to prepare and does not require much time or effort. It takes about 20 minutes to prepare and 50 minutes to cook, making it perfect for serving 8 people.
Main Ingredients for Onion Tart:
Dough Ingredients:
- 1¾ cups of all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup of frozen butter
- Up to 5 tablespoons of cold water
- ¼ teaspoon of salt
Filling Ingredients:
- 7 cups of peeled and sliced onions
- ¼ cup of olive oil
- 3 tablespoons of cold water
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- ½ cup of liquid milk
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- ½ teaspoon of white pepper
Preparation Method:
Preparing the Dough: In a large, deep bowl, mix the flour and salt. Gradually add the butter, kneading with your hands until combined. Slowly add the water until you achieve a smooth, cohesive dough. Flatten the dough, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 45 minutes.
Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface using a rolling pin into a circular shape that fits the size of the tart pan. Gently transfer the dough into the pan, pressing it into the edges. Prick the dough with a thin wooden skewer, then place a piece of parchment paper on top and add some legumes to weigh it down.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F). Place the tart pan on the middle rack and bake for 20 minutes until the dough is partially cooked. Remove from the oven, discard the parchment paper and legumes, and return the tart to the oven for another 10-15 minutes until it turns light golden.
Preparing the Filling: Heat olive oil in a wide skillet over high heat. Add the sliced onions and stir briefly with a wooden spoon. Cover the skillet and cook the onions over low heat for about 10 minutes until they turn light golden.
Remove the skillet from the heat and pour in the water and flour, whisking with a hand whisk. Return the skillet to the heat, add the milk, salt, and white pepper, and continue whisking for a few minutes until the onion mixture is well combined.
Allow the filling to cool slightly, then pour it over the baked tart crust. Place the tart back in the oven for 15 minutes until the filling sets and turns golden.
Remove the onion tart from the oven and serve immediately while hot.
Enjoy this delightful onion tart, hoping it becomes a favorite at your table!
