Pani Puri – How to Make Indian Pani Puri
Pani Puri is a popular Indian street food loved by those who enjoy spicy flavors. This dish features crispy puri bread filled with a spicy and tangy water, potato stuffing, and chutney, creating an explosion of flavors with every bite. Here's how to prepare this delicious snack at home.
Ingredients for Pani Puri:
- 1 cup fine semolina
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- ½ cup boiled chickpeas
- ½ cup water
For the Potato Filling:
- 1 large potato
- 1 onion, chopped
- A pinch of salt
- 3 teaspoons chopped coriander
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Sauce (Pani):
- ½ cup fresh coriander leaves
- ½ cup fresh mint leaves
- ½ teaspoon tamarind paste
- ½ teaspoon ginger
- 2 green chili peppers
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups water
Preparation Steps:
Prepare the Puri Bread:
In a medium bowl, mix the semolina, flour, and vegetable oil. Rub the semolina with the oil until well combined.Add water and knead the mixture into a dough. Cover the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes.
Roll out the dough with a dusting of flour on top, then cut it into small circles using a round cutter.
Prepare the Potato Filling:
Boil the potato until tender, then chop it into small cubes. In a medium bowl, add the boiled potatoes, chopped onions, salt, chopped coriander, cumin, paprika, and black pepper. Mash the mixture until the potatoes are smooth and well mixed with the spices.Fry the Puri:
Heat oil in a deep pot. Fry the puri circles in the hot oil, turning them until golden brown on all sides. Remove and set aside.Place the fried puri in a bowl. Using a small spoon, fill each puri with the potato mixture, making a small opening in the center to hold the filling.
Prepare the Spicy Water (Pani):
In a blender, combine the mint leaves, coriander leaves, green chilies, ginger, and tamarind paste. Blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into a bowl, add salt, cumin powder, and water, stirring until well combined.Assemble the Pani Puri:
Fill each puri with the potato filling, then add a few boiled chickpeas. Dip each puri into the prepared mint water or tamarind water before serving.
