Panna Cotta – Ingredients and Preparation of This Classic Italian Dessert

Panna Cotta

When thinking of Italy, many immediately think of famous dishes like lasagna, pizza, or pasta. However, the country’s rich dessert tradition is often overlooked, particularly the famous panna cotta. This popular Italian dessert, especially beloved in the Piedmont region where it originated, means "cooked cream" in Italian. It boasts a light, creamy texture created with simple ingredients that are staples in most kitchens. The key ingredient, gelatin, gives panna cotta its signature smoothness. Its versatility lies in the variety of flavors you can add, such as berry, strawberry, caramel, or chocolate sauces, along with fresh fruits. The classic flavor, however, is vanilla with a soft white color.

Ingredients (for 4 people):

Panna Cotta

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla, caramel, or any preferred flavoring
  • 4 tablespoons of gelatin powder
  • Cold water
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 150 grams of strawberries
  • 150 grams of berries (or any other available fruit)

How to Prepare Panna Cotta:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the heavy cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla over low heat.
  2. Stir the mixture continuously for 5 minutes or until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. In a separate bowl, dissolve the gelatin by adding half a cup of cold water, then pour it into the cream and milk mixture, stirring well.
  4. Once the mixture thickens slightly, remove it from the heat and pour it into your desired mold, decorating it with fruit pieces as preferred.
  5. Cover the mold with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for about an hour and a half until it’s ready to serve.
  6. You can further decorate it with powdered sugar or strawberry sauce.

Strawberry Sauce Preparation:

Ingredients for Strawberry Sauce:

  • 1 cup of strawberries
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla

How to Prepare Strawberry Sauce:

  1. Cut the strawberries into medium-sized pieces.
  2. Mix the sugar, strawberries, and vanilla in a pot, cooking over medium heat while occasionally stirring.
  3. Mash some of the strawberries with a wooden spoon as you stir.
  4. Let it cook for 15 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Remove from heat, blend one-third of the sauce, then mix it back with the rest of the sauce.
  6. Place the sauce in the fridge until ready to serve.
