Stuffed Onions – Recipe and Preparation Method

Stuffed onions are a unique main dish often served at the table, known for their distinct flavor and high nutritional value that provides energy throughout the day. This type of stuffed dish is especially loved because it’s different from the usual varieties of stuffed vegetables.

Main Ingredients for Stuffed Onions:

Stuffed Onions

  • 7 large onions
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 200 grams of finely minced meat
  • 2 large carrots, finely grated
  • ½ cup of ready-to-use boiled peas
  • 1 large tomato, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried mint
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup short-grain rice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Preparation Method for Stuffed Onions:

  1. Prepare the Onions:
Using a sharp knife, hollow out the onions carefully, ensuring you don't cut them entirely in half—only hollow them from the top to the middle. Place the hollowed onions in a medium-sized pot filled with water and bring to a boil. Cook for 10 minutes until the onions are soft, then drain and set aside to cool slightly.

  2. Separate Onion Layers:
Gently separate the onion layers to stuff each one individually. Meanwhile, soak the rice in hot water for 30 minutes, then drain. Add the finely chopped onion, grated carrot, boiled peas, chopped tomato, dried mint, salt, ground black pepper, turmeric, cumin, and olive oil to the rice. Mix well using a plastic spatula until all ingredients are combined, creating a ready-to-use rice stuffing.

  3. Stuff the Onions:
Fill each onion layer with the rice mixture, then place the stuffed onions in a large, deep pot. Pour enough water to cover the stuffed onions, add lemon juice, half a teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Cover the pot and cook over low heat for several hours until the stuffed onions are fully cooked.

Enjoy this delightful dish, hoping it will be a hit at your table!
