Tredelnik (Chimney Cake) – How to Prepare This Delicious Dessert
Tredelnik, a famous dessert originating from the lively streets of Budapest, Hungary, is a delightful creation of Hungarian and Romanian cuisine. Though widely popular in Prague, especially among tourists, it is not originally Czech but rather Hungarian. Its traditional name is "Kürtőskalács," also known as "chimney cake," made from a special dough wrapped in a cone shape, baked, and then dusted with sugar and cinnamon. This delicious treat is typically filled with whipped cream, spread with Nutella, and topped with nuts. In its modern form, Tredelnik is often served with ice cream, especially during summer.

Ingredients for Tredelnik:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 packet of yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons powdered milk
- ¼ cup warm water
- ¼ cup melted butter
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 egg
- ½ cup semi-skimmed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
- A pinch of salt
- Metal cone molds for shaping
How to Prepare Tredelnik:
Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, mix the yeast with warm water and sugar. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes until the yeast activates.
Prepare the Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, combine the powdered milk, flour, and a pinch of salt, mixing well.
Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the half cup of milk, melted butter, egg, ¼ cup of sugar, the prepared yeast mixture, and vanilla. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
Combine and Knead: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, kneading by hand until the dough becomes soft and smooth. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
Shape the Dough: After resting, roll out the dough with a rolling pin and cut it into long strips about the width of a finger.
Prepare the Molds: Brush the metal cone molds with melted butter to prevent sticking. Wrap the dough strips around the cones, forming the signature chimney shape. Brush the outside with butter and roll the dough in sugar.
Bake the Tredelnik: Line a baking tray with parchment paper, place the Tredelnik molds on it, and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (392°F) until golden brown.
Cool, Decorate, and Serve: Once baked, remove the Tredelnik from the oven and let them cool slightly. Decorate with powdered sugar, nuts, and fill with the whipped cream prepared earlier. Your Tredelnik is now ready to enjoy!
