Greek Moussaka – Recipe and Preparation Method

  • 2 medium-sized eggplants, sliced into thick rounds.
  • Olive oil (as needed).
  • 500 grams of finely ground beef.
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped.
  • 2 tablespoons of minced garlic.
  • 1 can of tomato sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon of dried oregano.
  • 1 teaspoon of salt.
  • 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper.
  • 3 tablespoons of butter.
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour.
  • 1 cup of fresh cream.
  • 1 egg, beaten.
  • ½ cup of grated Parmesan cheese.

Preparation Method for Greek Moussaka:

Preparing the Eggplant:
  1. Brush the thick eggplant slices with olive oil on both sides and arrange them on a parchment-lined and oiled baking tray.
  2. Grill the eggplant slices in the oven until they turn golden.
Preparing the Meat Sauce:
  1. Heat a small amount of oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until the meat is fully cooked.
  3. Add the minced garlic, oregano, tomato sauce, ½ teaspoon of salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together until well combined and simmer for a few minutes.
Assembling the Moussaka:
  1. Grease a suitable baking dish with oil and layer half of the grilled eggplant slices on the bottom.
  2. Pour the meat mixture over the eggplant slices, then layer the remaining eggplant on top.
Preparing the Cheese Sauce:
  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour, remaining salt, and black pepper, and stir continuously.
  2. Gradually add the fresh cream, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
  3. Add the beaten egg and continue stirring. Then, add the grated Parmesan cheese and mix everything together until smooth and well combined.
  4. Pour the cheese sauce over the second layer of eggplant.
Baking the Moussaka:
  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F). Once heated, place the baking dish in the oven and bake for approximately 45 minutes, until all the ingredients are fully cooked and the top is golden.
