Ingredients for Kazandibi (Turkish Muhallebi):
- 400 grams of sweetened condensed milk (Nestlé)
- 2 cups of drinking water
- 3 pieces of mastic, ground
- ½ cup of cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon of butter (at room temperature)
- ¾ cup of powdered sugar
For Decoration:
- Crushed pistachios (optional, as desired)
Preparation Method for Kazandibi (Turkish Muhallebi):
Prepare the Milk Mixture:
- In a medium-sized pot over medium heat, combine the sweetened condensed milk, drinking water, cornstarch, and ground mastic. Stir the mixture well using a hand whisk until the cornstarch dissolves completely.
- Continue stirring gently and consistently until the mixture thickens and begins to boil. Let it simmer for about one minute.
Prepare the Caramel Layer:
- In a separate pot, melt the butter and add the powdered sugar. Stir the mixture over heat until the sugar turns into caramel.
- Pour about one-third of the milk mixture over the caramel in stripes, ensuring the layers do not mix. Then, gently pour the remaining milk mixture over the caramel layer without stirring.
Cook and Cool:
- Let the mixture simmer for an additional minute after it starts to boil. Remove the pot from heat and allow it to cool to room temperature.
- Once cooled, place the pot in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours to let the dessert set completely.
Serve:
- Once fully chilled, flip the contents of the pot onto a serving dish.
- Garnish the top with crushed pistachios as desired.
