Oven-baked moussaka is a flavorful dish known for its rich taste and high nutritional value. It is also easy to prepare, taking no more than 90 minutes to cook. Ingredients for Oven-Baked Moussaka:
- 2 medium-sized eggplants, sliced thin.
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
- 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped.
- 3 cloves of crushed garlic.
- 800 grams of ground meat.
- 400 grams of crushed tomatoes.
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
- Salt to taste.
- ½ teaspoon of mixed spices.
- ⅓ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Oil as needed.
Ingredients for Béchamel Sauce:
- 75 grams of butter.
- 75 grams of all-purpose flour.
- 2 cups of liquid milk.
How to Prepare Oven-Baked Moussaka:
- Sprinkle salt over the eggplant slices and set them aside for a while.
- Fry the eggplant slices until they are golden brown on both sides, then place them on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Heat the olive oil in a medium-sized pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and crushed garlic, stirring occasionally until softened.
- Add the ground meat and stir for about 8 minutes. Then, add the ground cinnamon, crushed tomatoes, mixed spices, and salt. Let the mixture simmer until it starts boiling, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 30 minutes to reduce the liquids.
Preparing the Béchamel Sauce:
- Melt the butter in a suitable pot over medium heat, then add the flour and stir until well combined.
- Gradually pour in the liquid milk while stirring continuously. Lower the heat and continue stirring until the sauce thickens.
Assembling the Moussaka:
- Lightly grease a baking dish with some oil. Layer the bottom with some of the fried eggplant slices, then spread a portion of the meat mixture on top. Repeat the process, adding another layer of eggplant slices followed by the meat mixture, ensuring the top layer is eggplant slices.
- Pour the béchamel sauce over the top and sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly across the surface.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F), and once it reaches the desired temperature, bake the moussaka for about 45 minutes or until the top turns golden.
