This Moussaka with Béchamel is known for its delicious taste and high nutritional value. It’s also easy to prepare, requiring no more than 75 minutes to make and cook. Ingredients for Moussaka with Béchamel:
- 6 medium-sized potatoes, peeled, sliced into rounds, and fried
- 6 medium-sized eggplants, peeled, sliced into rounds, and fried
- 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 cups of ready-made béchamel sauce
For the Meat Filling:
- 2 tablespoons of oil
- 3 cloves of minced garlic
- 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
- 500 grams of minced meat
- 2 teaspoons of salt
- 1 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of mixed spices
- 1 teaspoon of dried coriander
- ½ red bell pepper, diced into small cubes
- ½ green bell pepper, diced into small cubes
- ½ yellow bell pepper, diced into small cubes
- 400 grams of chopped tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
- ½ cup of grated carrots
Preparation Steps for Moussaka with Béchamel:
Preparing the Filling:
- Heat the oil in a medium-sized pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, stirring occasionally until softened.
- Add the minced meat and cook, stirring occasionally, until it begins to brown.
- Season the meat with black pepper, salt, dried coriander, and mixed spices. Stir well until everything is well combined.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste, stirring until well mixed.
- Add the diced bell peppers (green, red, and yellow) along with the grated carrots. Stir occasionally until the vegetables soften and the mixture starts to boil.
Assembling the Moussaka:
- In a greased Pyrex dish, spread a thin layer of the meat filling on the bottom.
- Layer the fried potato slices over the meat, followed by a layer of fried eggplant slices.
- Repeat the layering process by adding another layer of meat filling, followed by more potato and eggplant slices, until all ingredients are used.
- Pour the béchamel sauce over the top layer and evenly spread it out.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the béchamel sauce.
Baking the Moussaka:
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Once preheated, place the dish in the oven and bake for about 40 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
