Toast and cheese kunafa is a delicious dessert known for its unique taste and high nutritional value. It’s easy to prepare, requiring only 35 minutes to assemble and 25 minutes to bake. This recipe serves eight people, and here’s how to make it.
Ingredients for Toast and Cheese Kunafa:
- 1 pack of soft white toast.
- 1 cup of sweet shredded mozzarella cheese.
- 1/4 cup of room-temperature butter.
- 1 teaspoon of ground mastic.
- 3 cups of liquid milk.
- 3/4 cup of fine semolina.
- 1/2 cup of white sugar.
Ingredients for Syrup (Qater):
- 2 cups of white sugar.
- 1 cup of water.
- 1 tablespoon of rose water.
- 1 tablespoon of orange blossom water.
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
Topping (optional):
- Crushed pistachios (as desired).
Steps to Prepare Toast and Cheese Kunafa:
Prepare the Syrup (Qater):
Cook the syrup:
- In a pot over medium heat, combine the sugar and water, stirring until it comes to a boil.
- Lower the heat and let the syrup simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
Flavor the syrup:
- Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the rose water, orange blossom water, and lemon juice. Set the syrup aside to cool.
Prepare the Kunafa:

- Remove the edges of the white toast and cut the slices into small cubes.
Mix with butter:
- In a food processor, blend the toast cubes with butter until a dough-like mixture forms.
Prepare the filling:
- In a pot over medium heat, combine the sugar, semolina, mastic, and milk. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens to a custard-like consistency. Set it aside to cool slightly.
Assemble the kunafa:
- Grease a baking dish with oil, then spread the toast mixture evenly on the bottom and sides of the dish.
- Pour the semolina filling over the toast base, then sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top.
Bake:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the kunafa for 20 minutes or until the top turns golden brown.
Add syrup:
- Remove the kunafa from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over it while it's still hot.
Flip and garnish:
- Flip the kunafa onto a serving plate, so the bottom becomes the top. Garnish with crushed pistachios.
