  • 2 onions, thinly sliced.
  • 1/4 cup of flour.
  • 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs.
  • 1 teaspoon of salt.
  • Light cooking oil.

For the Green Beans and Sauce:

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons of salt.
  • 450 grams of green beans.
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter.
  • 350 grams of mushrooms.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced.
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg.
  • 2 tablespoons of flour.
  • 1 cup of chicken broth.
  • 1 cup of cream.

How to Cook Green Bean Casserole:

  1. Prepare the Topping:

    • In a large bowl, mix the onions, flour, breadcrumbs, and salt until evenly combined.
    • Lightly grease a baking tray with oil and spread the onion mixture evenly over it.
    • Bake in a preheated oven at 230°C (446°F) for 30 minutes until golden brown, stirring halfway through.
    • Remove the tray from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200°C (392°F).
  2. Blanch the Green Beans:

    • Boil 16 cups of water in a large pot with 2 teaspoons of salt.
    • Add the green beans and cook for 5 minutes.
    • Drain the beans and immediately transfer them to a bowl filled with ice water to stop the cooking process.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:

    • Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the mushrooms, 1 teaspoon of salt, and black pepper, stirring until the mushrooms soften.
    • Add the garlic and nutmeg, stirring briefly, then sprinkle the flour over the mixture. Stir to coat the mushrooms evenly.
    • Gradually pour in the chicken broth, stirring constantly.
    • Lower the heat and add the cream, continuing to stir until the mixture thickens to a creamy consistency.
  4. Assemble the Casserole:

    • Remove the skillet from the heat and mix in a quarter of the baked onion topping along with all the green beans. Stir gently to combine.
    • Transfer the green bean mixture to the baking tray, spreading it evenly.
    • Sprinkle the remaining onion topping over the surface.
  5. Bake the Casserole:

    • Place the tray in the oven and bake at 200°C (392°F) for 15 minutes.
  6. Serve:

    • Remove the casserole from the oven, portion it into serving plates, and enjoy this delicious and comforting dish with your family.
