Steps to Prepare Potato Gratin

  1. Pre-cook the Potatoes:

    • Place the potato slices in a pot, cover them with water, and parboil until they are half-cooked. Ensure the potatoes maintain their structure and do not become mushy.
  2. Prepare the Baking Dish:

    • Grease a baking dish with butter or vegetable oil.
    • Arrange the parboiled potato slices evenly at the bottom of the dish.
    • Sprinkle a little black pepper and place the bay leaves over the potatoes.
  3. Prepare the Creamy Mixture:

    • In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream and milk. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
    • Pour this mixture over the potato slices in the baking dish.
  4. Add Flavor and Toppings:

    • Distribute small pieces of butter over the surface of the dish.
    • Sprinkle black pepper, ground nutmeg, and salt evenly over the top.
    • Add cloves if desired for extra flavor.
    • Finally, spread the shredded cheddar cheese evenly across the top.
  5. Bake the Gratin:

    • Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).
    • Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for about 25 minutes, or until the potatoes are fully cooked and the top is golden brown.
  6. Serve:

    • Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly.
    • Serve the potato gratin in a suitable serving dish while it’s still warm, and enjoy its rich, creamy flavor with family or guests.
