French Baguette – How to Prepare Authentic French Baguette

The French Baguette is known for its delicious taste and simplicity in preparation. Below are the ingredients and step-by-step instructions to make this classic bread from French cuisine.

Ingredients:

French Baguette

For the Dough:

  • 400 grams of all-purpose flour.
  • 1 tablespoon of warm drinking water.
  • 1 tablespoon of white sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon of salt.
  • 1½ teaspoons of instant yeast.

For Brushing the Dough:

  • 1 egg yolk (only the yolk).
  • 1 tablespoon of drinking water.

Preparation Steps:

1. Activating the Yeast:

  1. In a small bowl, mix the yeast and sugar with the warm water.
  2. Stir well until the mixture is combined and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. Preparing the Dough:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  2. Add the frothy yeast mixture and mix until all the water is absorbed by the flour.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead thoroughly until it becomes soft and pliable.

3. First Proofing:

  1. Grease a large bowl with butter and place the dough inside.
  2. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let it rest for at least 1 hour, allowing the dough to double in size.

4. Shaping the Baguettes:

  1. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and divide it into three equal portions.
  2. Roll each portion into a rectangular shape, then fold and roll it into a cylindrical baguette shape.
  3. Ensure there are no air pockets in the dough, and seal the edges tightly.
  4. Use a knife to make slashes or decorative cuts on the surface of the dough.

5. Second Proofing:

  1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the baguettes on it.
  2. Cover them with plastic wrap and let them rest for another 1 hour.

6. Brushing and Baking:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and water.
  2. Using a kitchen brush, lightly coat the surface of the baguettes with the egg mixture.
  3. Preheat the oven to 170°C (340°F).
  4. Once the oven reaches the desired temperature, bake the baguettes for 20–25 minutes or until they turn golden brown.

Serving:

  • Allow the baguettes to cool slightly before slicing.
  • Serve fresh with butter, jam, or alongside a main course for a delightful meal.

Tips for Success:

  • Ensure the yeast is activated properly to achieve a fluffy texture.
  • Knead the dough thoroughly to develop gluten for a chewy consistency.
  • Resting the dough adequately is key to getting the perfect rise.

Enjoy your homemade French Baguette with family or guests, savoring its crisp crust and soft interior. Bon appétit!
