Lettuce and yogurt salad is a delicious and refreshing dish commonly served in Syrian cuisine, especially as a side dish with rice-based meals. It is known for its simplicity, quick preparation, and its richness in nutrients beneficial to the body. This salad is often paired with dishes like rice with fava beans, peas, meat, fried green beans, or even eggplant maqluba.
Ingredients for Lettuce and Yogurt Salad:
- 2 kg of fresh lettuce
- 6 cloves of crushed garlic
- ½ cup of vinegar
- Salt to taste
- ½ cup of finely chopped fresh mint or 3 tablespoons of dried mint powder
- 3 cups of yogurt (strained)
- Cold water as needed
How to Prepare Lettuce and Yogurt Salad:
Start by preparing the lettuce. Remove any dirt and separate the lettuce leaves.
Wash the leaves thoroughly with cold water a few times, then soak them in a mixture of vinegar and cold water for 10 minutes.
Sprinkle some salt over the leaves, then gently rub the leaves with the salt and vinegar mixture. Wash the leaves two or more times with cold water.
Drain the lettuce leaves in a suitable strainer and leave them to dry completely.
For the mint, tear the leaves and wash them well with cold water a few times. Then soak them in a solution of 1 teaspoon of vinegar dissolved in water for 5 minutes. Rinse the mint thoroughly with cold water and drain it well.
Make sure the lettuce and mint are completely dry before you begin chopping.
Chop the lettuce into thin strips of medium length and place them in a deep bowl. Continue until all the lettuce is prepared.
Finely chop the mint leaves and add them to the chopped lettuce.
Peel the garlic cloves, crush them, and add them to the mixture.
In a separate bowl, add the required amount of yogurt, a pinch of salt, and half of the crushed garlic. Stir the mixture well to combine until it becomes smooth.
Pour the yogurt and garlic mixture over the lettuce and mint, stirring the salad until fully combined. If the yogurt is too thick, add a little cold or ice-cold water to achieve the desired consistency.
Stir the salad well, then transfer it to a suitable serving dish. Sprinkle a small amount of dried mint on top as garnish.
Serve the lettuce and yogurt salad chilled alongside any meal of your choice.
This refreshing and nutritious salad makes a perfect complement to many dishes. Enjoy!
