Yemeni Sayadiya – Recipe for Yemeni Sayadiya

Ingredients for Yemeni Sayadiya:

For the Fish:

  • 1 kg fish, cut into thick slices

Spices & Seasoning:

  • 3 tablespoons Yemeni hot pepper blend
  • 2 teaspoons curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Other Ingredients:

  • 6 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 medium potatoes, cut into large cubes
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 3 medium tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 small green hot peppers, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 beef or chicken bouillon cubes
  • 4 cups washed and drained rice
  • 7 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Preparation Method for Yemeni Sayadiya:

Step 1: Preparing the Fish

  1. Season the fish slices with the Yemeni hot pepper blend and 1 teaspoon of curry powder. Mix well to coat the fish evenly.

Step 2: Frying the Fish

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a suitable pot.
  2. Fry the fish slices on all sides until they turn golden brown. Once done, remove them from the oil and set aside.

Step 3: Preparing the Vegetables

  1. In the same pot, add the potato cubes and fry for about 7 minutes or until they turn golden.
  2. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 3 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes, chopped cilantro, green hot peppers, 1 teaspoon curry powder, bouillon cubes, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, and black pepper. Stir all the ingredients and let them cook on low heat until the potatoes are tender.

Step 4: Cooking the Rice

  1. Once the vegetables are tender, place the fried fish on top of the mixture in the pot.
  2. Add the washed rice, salt, and water.
  3. Bring everything to a boil, then reduce the heat and cover. Let it cook on low heat for about 25 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked.

Serving the Yemeni Sayadiya

  1. Once the rice is cooked, remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
  2. Serve the Yemeni Sayadiya hot on a large serving platter, perfect for sharing with family or guests.
