Basbousa with Sweetened Condensed Milk – Delicious & Easy Recipe

Basbousa is a classic Middle Eastern dessert that is widely popular due to its rich flavor, soft texture, and simple preparation. This version, made with sweetened condensed milk, adds extra moisture and sweetness, making it irresistibly delicious.

This semolina-based cake is easy to make, requires simple ingredients, and is perfect for gatherings and special occasions.

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter
  • ¾ cup yogurt
  • ¼ cup ghee
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon liquid vanilla

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups coarse semolina
  • 1 ½ cups fine semolina
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup shredded coconut

For Soaking & Topping:

  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • Pine nuts or mixed nuts for garnish (optional)

How to Prepare Basbousa with Sweetened Condensed Milk:

1. Preparing the Batter:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and ghee together. Remove from heat immediately.
  2. In an electric mixer, combine yogurt, vanilla, and egg with the melted butter and ghee. Mix until smooth.
  3. Gradually add the coarse and fine semolina, followed by sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and coconut.
  4. Mix on low speed for 3 minutes until fully combined and you get a smooth batter.

2. Preparing the Baking Dish:

  1. Grease a baking pan with a little ghee or butter.
  2. Pour the basbousa batter into the pan and spread it evenly.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes at room temperature.

3. Baking the Basbousa:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until the surface turns golden brown.

4. Soaking & Serving:

  1. Remove the basbousa from the oven and immediately pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top.
  2. Let it cool completely at room temperature (do not refrigerate) to allow the cake to absorb the milk.
  3. Cut into squares or diamond shapes and garnish with pine nuts or mixed nuts as desired.
