Turkish Chicken Shawarma – Recipe & Cooking Method
Turkish Chicken Shawarma is a delicious and easy-to-make main dish, famous for its rich flavors and fragrant aroma. Turkish cuisine is known for its diverse spices, which add a unique taste to dishes.
Shawarma is one of the most popular street foods worldwide, prepared with either lamb or chicken, combined with pickles, spices, and garlic sauce to create an unforgettable flavor.
Ingredients for Turkish Chicken Shawarma:
- 2 kg of chicken breasts
- ½ cup of vinegar
- 2 lemons (juiced)
- 1 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of white pepper
- 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- ¼ cup of olive oil
- 1 cup of yogurt
- 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon of ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon of hot red pepper powder
- 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon of shawarma spice mix
- 6 cloves of minced garlic
- ½ cup of cornstarch
- 4 tomatoes, sliced
- 6 pickled cucumbers, sliced
- 1 teaspoon of chili paste
How to Prepare Turkish Chicken Shawarma at Home:
1. Marinate the Chicken:
- Wash the chicken breasts well with salt and water, then drain them completely.
- In a deep bowl, mix:
- Ground ginger, lemon juice, vinegar, black and white pepper, yogurt, red pepper powder, shawarma spice mix, cardamom, paprika, a little olive oil, and minced garlic.
- Stir the marinade well until all ingredients are fully blended.
- Slice the chicken into thin strips and coat them well with the marinade.
- Slice the lemons into medium-sized rounds and place them over the chicken strips.
- Cover the bowl tightly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to develop.
2. Cook the Chicken:
- Heat a little oil in a large pan over low heat.
- Add the marinated chicken strips and cook, stirring occasionally, until fully golden and cooked through.
- Let the chicken crisp slightly for extra flavor.
How to Prepare Garlic Sauce (Toum Cream):
- In a small pot, mix cornstarch with 1 cup of cold water.
- Stir well until the mixture thickens, then place it over low heat, stirring continuously until it becomes a thick, smooth paste.
- Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
- In a blender, add 6 cloves of minced garlic, the cooled cornstarch mixture, and ¼ cup of lemon juice.
- Gradually add 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, blending continuously until the sauce becomes thick and creamy.
- Transfer the garlic sauce to a small serving bowl.
How to Assemble Chicken Shawarma Wraps:
