Wonton Soup – Traditional Chinese Dumpling Soup Recipe

Wonton soup is one of the most delicious soups, widely enjoyed around the world. The recipe varies depending on regional flavors and ingredients, but its origins trace back to China, where it is often called Chinese Dumpling Soup.

This soup is known for its rich nutritional value, as it combines flavorful meat fillings with fresh vegetables and chicken broth, making it a warm and comforting dish.

For the Wonton Filling:

  • 2 kg finely ground lamb (or chicken/beef)
  • ½ cup finely chopped cabbage
  • 6 stalks green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons soy oil
  • 2 tablespoons salt

For the Wonton Wrappers:

  • A pack of wonton wrappers (or substitute with thick samosa sheets if unavailable)

For the Soup:

  • 1.5 liters chicken broth
  • 4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Chopped green onions for garnish
  • Fresh parsley or mint, finely chopped (for garnish)

How to Prepare Wonton Soup:

1. Preparing the Wonton Filling:

  1. In a deep bowl, mix the ground lamb, chopped cabbage, green onions, ginger, soy sauce, soy oil, and salt.
  2. Stir well until all ingredients are fully combined and firm.
  3. Set aside to rest while preparing the wrappers.

2. Shaping the Wontons:

  1. Lay out the wonton wrappers on a smooth surface.
  2. Cut them into small squares if needed.
  3. Place 1 teaspoon of filling in the center of each wonton square.
  4. Fold the square diagonally to form a triangle, pressing the edges firmly to seal the dumpling.
  5. Take the two opposite corners of the triangle and press them together in the center to create a hat-like shape.
    • Lightly wet the edges with water to ensure they stick together.
  6. Repeat until all the wontons are formed.

3. Cooking the Wonton Soup:

  1. In a deep pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Once boiling, gently drop all the wontons into the broth at once.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the wontons simmer until they are fully cooked.

4. Final Touches & Serving:

  1. Finely chop the green onions and add them to the soup.
  2. Stir in sesame oil and apple cider vinegar, letting the soup simmer for another 5 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and pour into deep serving bowls.
  4. Garnish with chopped parsley or mint for added freshness.
