Nargil Sweet – Recipe and Preparation Method
Nargil Sweet, also known as Coconut Delight, is one of the traditional and beloved desserts in Oman. It is typically served at celebrations and special occasions. This sweet treat has a wonderfully rich flavor and high nutritional value, but should be enjoyed in moderation due to its high sugar content. Here are the ingredients and preparation method:
Ingredients for Nargil Sweet:
-
1 cup of powdered milk or fresh milk (fresh milk is preferred)
-
1 cup of white sugar
-
100 grams of butter
-
3 cups of shredded coconut
-
1 tablespoon of orange blossom water (Maa Zaher)
For Decoration:
-
A handful of cashews, almonds, or pistachios (as desired)
-
Additional shredded coconut for topping
How to Prepare Nargil Sweet:
Place the sugar into a non-stick pot or a suitable pan over the stove.
Lightly sprinkle some water over the sugar and stir well until the sugar melts and turns into a caramel-like consistency (golden or light brown in color).
Once the sugar caramelizes, add the fresh milk (or if using powdered milk, first dissolve it in hot water and then add).
At first, the caramel and milk mixture will form clumps. Keep stirring patiently until the mixture turns into a thick, smooth liquid and the lumps completely disappear.
(This step requires patience and low heat to avoid burning the milk.)
Once you have a thick, smooth caramel-milk mixture, add the butter and stir continuously until the butter melts and blends perfectly into the mixture.
Now add the shredded coconut and orange blossom water to the mixture. Keep stirring until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
At this stage, the mixture should become very thick and hard to stir.
If the mixture is still soft and not firm enough, simply add more shredded coconut until it forms a cohesive, dough-like texture.
Once you achieve the desired consistency, transfer the mixture into a serving dish and spread it evenly.
Sprinkle additional shredded coconut and pistachios (or other nuts) over the surface as desired.
Optionally, you can shape the Nargil Sweet into small balls, roll them in coconut, and place a pistachio in the center of each for an elegant presentation.
Serve the Nargil Sweet cold to family or guests and enjoy its delightful flavor and rich texture with health and happiness!
