Swiss Roll – Recipe and Preparation Method
The Swiss Roll is one of the most delightful and delicious desserts, made with some of the tastiest ingredients. Its origins trace back to American cuisine.
Ingredients for Swiss Roll:
-
6 eggs
-
1/2 cup of sugar
-
2 cups of sifted flour
-
1/4 cup of vegetable oil
-
Lemon zest
-
1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
-
1 cup of plain cocoa powder
-
1 cup of fresh milk
-
Pieces of dark chocolate
-
1/4 stick of butter
-
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon of baking powder
-
1/4 cup of lemon juice
How to Prepare the Swiss Roll:
First, prepare a special Swiss roll baking tray — it should be rectangular, shallow, and have low edges.
Line the bottom and sides of the tray completely with parchment paper. Alternatively, grease the tray well with butter, ghee, or vegetable oil, then dust it lightly with flour.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (about 350°F).
In a small pot, combine the cocoa powder, 1/4 stick of butter, and 1 cup of sugar. Stir over low heat until the butter fully melts. Gradually add the milk while stirring quickly and continuously. Drop in a few pieces of dark chocolate and continue stirring until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool.
In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, lemon zest, and vinegar. Begin mixing at medium speed with an electric mixer.
Gradually add the sugar and vanilla extract while continuing to mix.
Beat the mixture continuously for about 15 minutes at medium speed until it becomes fluffy and pale.
Afterward, gradually sift in the flour and baking powder into the mixture while continuing to beat.
Mix for another 5 minutes, then pour the batter into the prepared Swiss roll tray.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on your oven.
After 15 minutes, check for doneness by inserting a thin wooden skewer into the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is done.
Once fully baked, remove the tray from the oven. Immediately place a lightly dampened cloth over the surface of the cake, then flip the cake onto another tray or surface (preferably onto a wire rack) and remove the cloth carefully.
Allow the cake to cool completely.
Once cooled, place the cake on a smooth surface. Spread the cooled chocolate filling over the entire surface of the cake and sprinkle chopped nuts over it.
Gently roll the cake into a tight log (Swiss roll shape).
Wrap the Swiss roll in plastic wrap tightly, sealing the ends, and place it in the refrigerator to chill until it’s ready to be served.
Before serving, unwrap the Swiss roll, place it on a serving platter, and coat the surface evenly with more chocolate.
Decorate with slices of banana, chopped nuts, or strawberries as desired.
