Mac and Cheese – Classic Baked Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Mac and Cheese is one of the most beloved and comforting pasta dishes, and today we’ll walk you through one of the most delicious ways to prepare it. It’s a dish that takes less than one hour from start to finish, making it perfect for busy days. Not only is it simple and quick, but it’s also rich in flavor and packed with nutritional value from its cheese and milk-based ingredients.

Ingredients for Mac and Cheese (Serves 6):

Mac and Cheese

  • 500 grams elbow or small spiral pasta

  • 300 grams shredded cheddar cheese

  • 300 grams shredded mozzarella cheese

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 100 grams butter

  • 3 cups fresh milk

  • 4 eggs

  • 3 teaspoons sugar

  • 4 teaspoons salt

  • Dried basil (optional, to taste)

How to Prepare Mac and Cheese:

  1. Boil the pasta:
In a pot of boiling water, add 1 teaspoon of salt, then cook the pasta according to the package instructions—but slightly undercooked.
Drain the pasta well and transfer it to a mixing bowl.

  2. Butter the pasta:
Add about 75 grams of butter to the hot drained pasta. Stir until the butter melts and coats the pasta evenly.

  3. Prepare the baking dish:
Grease a baking dish with the remaining 25 grams of butter.
Spread a layer of pasta in the dish, then top with a generous amount of shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese.

  4. Build the layers:
Sprinkle a little dried basil over the cheese, then repeat the layering twice more with pasta and cheeses until you have three layers total.
Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese evenly on the top.

  5. Prepare the custard:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, and the remaining salt until well combined.

  6. Bake the mac and cheese:
Pour the egg and milk mixture evenly over the layered pasta and cheese.
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and place it in a preheated oven at 180°C (356°F).
Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and return it to the oven for another 10 minutes until the top is golden and crispy.

  7. Serve:
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Serve hot to your family or guests and enjoy the rich, cheesy flavor!
