British Shepherd's Pie – Traditional Recipe and Cooking Guide

Shepherd's Pie, also known as Cottage Pie, is a classic dish rooted in British cuisine. It first appeared in 1791, following the introduction of potatoes to Europe as a staple food for the poor.

This hearty meal is known for its high energy content. Rich in carbohydrates, it's a filling dish commonly prepared for lunch, especially by home cooks looking to serve something both satisfying and flavorful.

Ingredients for 4 servings:

British Shepherd's Pie

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  • 1 finely chopped onion

  • 1 carrot, diced into small cubes

  • 1 can of chopped mushrooms

  • 500 grams (1.1 lb) of ground lamb

  • 1½ cups of beef stock (or water as a substitute)

  • 1 tablespoon of flour

  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste

  • 500 grams (1.1 lb) of boiled potatoes

  • 2 tablespoons of butter

  • 3 tablespoons of hot milk

  • Salt to taste

  • Black pepper to taste

Preparation Steps:

Begin by heating olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the chopped onion and sauté until soft. Stir in the diced carrot and mushrooms, cooking until they start to soften.

Next, add the ground lamb to the pan and cook thoroughly, stirring until the meat is fully browned and blended with the vegetables.

In a separate bowl, dissolve the flour in the beef stock or water, then pour this mixture into the skillet. Stir constantly over low heat until the mixture begins to simmer.

Add the Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste to the skillet, mix well, and cover the pan. Let the filling simmer gently, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Meanwhile, slightly reheat the boiled potatoes, then mash them together with the butter, hot milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.

In a baking dish (preferably a glass or ceramic one), spread the meat mixture evenly as the base layer. Carefully spoon the mashed potatoes on top, smoothing them out evenly over the surface.

Place the dish in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) and bake for about 25 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown.

Once ready, remove the Shepherd’s Pie from the oven and serve hot. It pairs beautifully with a fresh green salad or sautéed vegetables on the side.
