500 grams of ground meat (preferably beef or lamb)
-
6 loaves of whole wheat pita bread
-
2 medium onions
-
2 medium tomatoes
-
1 cup chopped parsley
-
Chili flakes or hot pepper, to taste
-
1 teaspoon vinegar
-
1 green bell pepper
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
¼ teaspoon black pepper
-
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
-
1 teaspoon cumin
-
½ teaspoon sugar
-
1 tablespoon butter
Preparation:
-
Prepare the filling:
In a large bowl, combine the ground meat with finely chopped onions, tomatoes, green pepper, parsley, spices (salt, black pepper, ginger, cumin), sugar, chili, and vinegar. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well blended. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for 1 hour to allow the flavors to develop. -
Stuff the bread:
After chilling, take each loaf of pita bread and gently open it from one side to form a pocket. Spoon an even amount of the meat filling inside, spreading it evenly. -
Seal and coat the bread:
Close each stuffed pita firmly to prevent the filling from spilling out. Lightly brush both sides of the bread with a bit of oil or melted butter using a pastry brush. -
Wrap and bake:
Wrap each piece in aluminum foil and arrange them on a baking tray. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 20 minutes, or until the bread is crisp and golden brown. -
Serve:
Remove the Hawawshi from the foil and transfer to serving plates. Serve hot alongside green salad and crispy fries for a complete, satisfying meal.
Egyptian Hawawshi combines the simplicity of street food with the depth of homemade flavor, making it a crowd-pleasing dish the whole family can enjoy.
