Famous Boston Cream Cake

For the Cake:

  • 1¼ cups of flour

  • 1 cup of sugar

  • ⅓ cup of butter

  • ¾ cup of milk

  • A pinch of salt

  • 1½ teaspoons of baking powder

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

For the Filling:

  • 2 egg yolks

  • 1 cup of milk

  • ½ cup of cream

  • ¼ cup of sugar

  • A pinch of salt

  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Glaze:

  • 100 grams of chocolate

  • 1 tablespoon of butter

How to Prepare Boston Cream Cake:

Start with the filling:
In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, cornstarch, and two tablespoons of milk. Meanwhile, heat the remaining milk and cream in a saucepan until it just begins to boil.

Slowly pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, stirring constantly to temper the eggs. Then pour everything back into the saucepan and return it to the heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble. Remove from heat, pour into a bowl, cover, and set aside to cool.

To prepare the cake batter:
In a bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and baking powder. In a separate bowl or mixer, beat the butter with the sugar, then add the egg, vanilla, and milk. Mix until smooth. Gradually add the dry ingredients while mixing until you get a well-blended batter.

Pour the batter into a greased cake pan and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool completely.

Once the cake has cooled:
Cut the sponge cake horizontally into two equal layers. Spread the cooled custard filling evenly on the bottom half, then place the top half back on.

To make the glaze:
Melt the chocolate with the butter over a hot water bath (double boiler) until smooth. Pour the warm chocolate glaze over the top of the assembled cake, allowing it to drip slightly down the sides.

Let the cake set before serving. Slice and enjoy this elegant dessert with family or guests—it’s a classic for a reason!
