French baguette is one of the most iconic breads in the world. Originating from France, this crisp and airy loaf has become a global favorite. This version, enriched with herbs and cheese, transforms the classic baguette into a flavorful, irresistible treat perfect for gatherings or as a savory side.
Ingredients (Serves 6)
For the dough:
-
3 cups all-purpose flour
-
1 tsp salt
-
1 cup warm water
-
1 tbsp honey
-
2 tsp instant yeast
-
Grated mozzarella cheese (as desired)
-
Grated parmesan cheese (as desired)
For the herb butter:
-
½ cup melted butter
-
¼ tsp garlic powder
-
¼ tsp dried thyme
-
¼ tsp dried parsley
For the basil drizzle:
-
1 bunch fresh basil
-
¼ cup olive oil
-
1 garlic clove
-
Salt to taste
-
Black pepper to taste
Method
-
Prepare the dough:
In a mixer bowl, combine warm water, honey, and yeast. Mix for 5 minutes until the yeast is activated and the mixture is frothy.
Add salt and flour gradually and mix until a soft, non-sticky dough forms. Knead for several minutes if needed. -
First proofing:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. -
Shape the baguettes:
Divide the dough into 4 equal portions. Shape each piece into a cylinder and roll into a spiral form. Place the shaped loaves on a parchment-lined baking tray. -
Second proofing:
Cover the tray and allow the dough to rise again for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). -
Initial bake:
Bake the loaves for 12–15 minutes or until the bottom turns golden. -
Make the herb butter:
Mix the melted butter with garlic powder, thyme, and parsley until smooth. Brush half of this mixture over the partially baked baguettes. Return to the oven for 5 more minutes to brown the tops. -
Prepare cheese filling:
To the remaining herb butter, add shredded mozzarella and parmesan. Stir until combined. -
Stuff the baguettes:
Slice each baguette diagonally into sections—do not cut all the way through. Fill each cut with the cheese mixture. Return the tray to the oven for another 5 minutes until the cheese melts. -
Make basil drizzle:
Blend the basil, olive oil, and garlic in a food processor. Add salt and black pepper to taste, and blend until smooth. -
Serve:
Remove the baguettes from the oven, drizzle with the fresh basil sauce, and serve warm.
This cheesy, herb-infused French baguette is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and bursting with flavor—a perfect side for pasta dishes, soups, or simply as an appetizer to share.
