Indian Kebab – Recipe and Cooking Instructions

Indian kebab is a flavorful and nourishing dish that originates from the rich and diverse Indian cuisine. Known for its bold spices and unique preparation, this dish has traveled far beyond its homeland and is now a favorite at Indian restaurants around the world.

It offers a wealth of nutritional benefits. Packed with energy-boosting calories, it also delivers essential minerals such as iron, copper, calcium, and potassium, along with immune-strengthening vitamins.

Typically served as a hearty lunch dish, Indian kebab is often accompanied by a complementary side—most commonly, a serving of rice.

Ingredients (Serves 4):

Indian Kebab

  • 500 grams of minced lamb

  • 6 peeled and chopped tomatoes

  • 2 onions, sliced

  • 6 cloves of garlic

  • 1 green bell pepper

  • 1 red bell pepper

  • ½ teaspoon of ground ginger

  • ½ teaspoon of ground cardamom

  • ½ teaspoon of black pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon of tomato paste

  • 1 teaspoon of red pepper paste (or hot pepper molasses)

  • ½ teaspoon of salt

  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

  • 2 tablespoons of toasted pine nuts

How to Prepare Indian Kebab:

Start by heating the vegetable oil in a large pot. Add the sliced onions and garlic and sauté until the onions become soft and translucent. Add the chopped tomatoes and let the mixture simmer over medium heat for about 30 minutes until it thickens.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, mix the ground lamb with one tablespoon of the toasted pine nuts. Season with half a teaspoon of salt and a quarter teaspoon of black pepper. Shape the meat mixture into small, evenly sized meatballs.

Once the tomato mixture is ready, add the remaining black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, salt, and red pepper paste. Stir well to combine.

Next, add the tomato paste along with the chopped red and green bell peppers. Stir again to blend all the ingredients, then remove from heat.

Pour the tomato and pepper sauce into a baking dish. Place the meatballs on top of the sauce.

Bake the dish in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for approximately 45 minutes or until the meatballs are fully cooked and the flavors have melded beautifully.

Once out of the oven, sprinkle the remaining toasted pine nuts over the top for a rich, nutty finish.

Serve hot alongside a plate of fluffy rice—ideal for soaking up the rich tomato and spice-infused sauce—and let your family enjoy the bold, comforting flavors of this beloved Indian dish.
