Kuwaiti Murabyan is a traditional dish that comes to us from the distinctive Kuwaiti cuisine. It is one of the most popular meals in Kuwait.

From Kuwait, this dish spread to Iraq and other Gulf countries, where it is frequently prepared at large gatherings and feasts.

This dish is packed with nutritional benefits, providing the body with fiber, minerals, vitamins, and phosphorus.

Ingredients for Kuwaiti Murabyan (serves six people):

For the rice base:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves of garlic

  • 1 teaspoon dried coriander

  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger

  • 500 grams boiled and peeled shrimp

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • 3 tomatoes, diced

  • 1 cup water

  • 2 cups rice

For the shrimp topping:

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 onions, sliced

  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon curry powder

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

  • A bunch of chopped fresh coriander

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander

  • 1 tablespoon black pepper

  • 200 grams peeled shrimp

How to Cook Kuwaiti Murabyan:

First, heat the oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes soft.

Mash the garlic, ginger, and dried coriander together, then add the mixture to the pot. Stir well, then add black pepper and the shrimp, stirring the ingredients lightly.

Next, add the diced tomatoes and cook the mixture on low heat for 10 minutes. Once it starts to boil, add the rice and stir to combine. Pour in enough water to cover the rice, reduce the heat, and simmer until the rice has absorbed all the liquid. Remove the pot from the heat once cooked.

Meanwhile, prepare the shrimp topping. Heat the oil in a separate pot and fry the sliced onions until golden. Add the mashed garlic, chopped coriander, and black pepper, stirring well. Add the shrimp to the pot and cook the mixture for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

To serve, spoon the rice into a serving dish, top with the flavorful shrimp layer, and present it to your family to enjoy the delicious taste of this classic Kuwaiti dish.
