Shrimp Biryani – Recipe and Cooking Instructions

Shrimp Biryani is a flavorful variation of the classic Indian biryani, known for its simplicity and delicious taste. Originating from Indian coastal cuisine, this dish has become a staple in many regions across South and Southeast Asia.

It’s especially popular in seaside communities, where fresh seafood is abundant. Shrimp Biryani is not only loved for its rich and spicy flavor, but also for its impressive nutritional value—being high in Omega-3 fatty acids, phosphorus, essential minerals, and vitamins necessary for human health.

Often served for lunch, it is also a favorite dish during festive gatherings and special occasions.


Ingredients for Shrimp Biryani (Serves 3):

Shrimp Biryani

 

  • 1½ cups of washed and soaked rice

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  • 1 finely chopped onion

  • 2 cloves of crushed garlic

  • 1 green chili pepper

  • 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger

  • 600 grams of cleaned and peeled shrimp

  • 3 tablespoons of curry paste

  • ¼ teaspoon of salt

  • ¼ teaspoon of Indian garam masala

  • 3 tomatoes, chopped

  • ¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 4 green cardamom pods

  • ¼ teaspoon of saffron threads


How to Make Shrimp Biryani:

Start by placing the onion, garlic, green chili, and ginger into a food processor. Blend the ingredients until smooth, then set the mixture aside.

In a wide skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the blended mixture of onion, garlic, chili, and ginger to the oil and sauté until fragrant and well combined.

Add the shrimp to the skillet and stir until evenly coated with the spice mixture. Next, mix in the curry paste, salt, and garam masala. Stir gently to allow the flavors to blend.

Now, add the chopped tomatoes and stir briefly. Once the ingredients are well-mixed, remove the skillet from the heat and set it aside.

In a separate pot, boil the rice in water flavored with turmeric until it is tender. Drain the rice and gently stir in the cardamom, bay leaves, and saffron to enhance the fragrance and color.

To assemble the biryani, layer a portion of the cooked rice in a baking dish. Spoon the shrimp mixture over the rice, then cover it with another layer of rice.

Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for fifteen minutes.

Once done, remove from the oven and serve hot in individual plates. This dish pairs well with a cool cucumber-yogurt salad (raita), letting your family enjoy a wholesome, savory seafood delight.
