Shrimp Masala – Recipe & Cooking Method
Indian Prawn Masala (Jheenga Masala)
Shrimp Masala is a delicious seafood dish from the heart of Indian cuisine, celebrated for its rich spices, aromatic sauce, and health-boosting properties.
Like many seafood dishes, it’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids that support brain health, sharpen memory, and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. Additionally, it contains essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, and zinc—making it a heart-friendly dish that helps prevent artery blockage and blood clots.
Ingredients for Shrimp Masala (Serves 4):
-
500 g shrimp, peeled and cleaned
-
1 tsp tomato paste
-
½ tsp salt
-
1 tsp sugar
-
1 tsp Indian masala spice mix (garam masala or curry blend)
-
¼ tsp ground red chili pepper
-
3 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro (coriander)
-
1 tsp lemon juice
-
1 cup coconut milk
-
3 tbsp vegetable oil
-
1 tsp mustard seeds
-
3 garlic cloves, minced
-
1 tbsp cornstarch
-
1 tbsp cold water
How to Prepare Shrimp Masala:
-
Prepare the sauce base:
In a bowl, mix the tomato paste, salt, sugar, masala spices, red chili, chopped cilantro, lemon juice, and coconut milk. Stir until well combined and smooth. Set aside. -
Sauté mustard seeds:
Heat the vegetable oil in a wide skillet over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and stir for about 1 minute, until they begin to pop and release aroma. -
Add garlic and shrimp:
Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté until golden. Add the shrimp and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently, just until they begin to turn pink. -
Add the sauce:
Pour in the coconut milk and spice mixture. Stir gently to coat the shrimp. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. -
Thicken the sauce:
In a small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in cold water. Add this slurry to the simmering sauce, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens. -
Finish and serve:
Once the sauce reaches a creamy consistency and the shrimp are fully cooked (opaque and curled), remove from heat.
Spoon the Shrimp Masala into serving bowls, garnish with extra cilantro if desired, and serve hot with steamed basmati rice, naan, or roti.
Enjoy the bold and comforting flavors of Indian seafood cuisine with your loved ones!
