Chocolate Kunafa – A Fusion of Tradition and Indulgence
Chocolate Kunafa is a unique twist on one of the most beloved desserts in the Arab world. A modern variant of the traditional Middle Eastern kunafa, this chocolate-filled delight blends rich heritage with irresistible flavor. It’s especially popular in the Levant—Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan—but its fame has spread far beyond, reaching Turkey, Greece, and even the Caucasus region.
The name "kunafa" is derived from the Arabic word kanf, meaning "to enclose" or "wrap," which beautifully describes the dessert's essence: a sweet filling encased in golden, crispy layers of shredded pastry.
Chocolate kunafa has gained popularity during Ramadan, where it serves as a luxurious dessert after long days of fasting. Packed with calories and energy, it provides a quick nutritional boost, though it’s best enjoyed in moderation for those watching their intake.

250g shredded kunafa dough (kataifi)
-
½ cup powdered sugar
-
½ cup ghee or clarified butter

2 packs of milk chocolate, chopped
-
¼ cup clotted cream (qashta or canned cream)

¼ cup sugar syrup (simple syrup or atar)
-
Melted milk chocolate for drizzling

Crushed pistachios for garnish
How to Make Chocolate Kunafa:
-
Prepare the dough:
Place the kunafa dough in a large mixing bowl. Gently separate the strands with your fingers until fluffy. Add the melted ghee and powdered sugar, then mix thoroughly to coat every strand evenly. -
Assemble the base:
In a greased baking dish, press a thin, even layer of the kunafa mixture to form the bottom base. -
Add the filling:
Place pieces of chopped milk chocolate over the base, leaving some space between them. Add a small spoonful of cream over every few pieces of chocolate. -
Top it off:
Cover the chocolate and cream completely with the remaining kunafa dough. Press gently to ensure it’s sealed well. -
Bake:
Bake the kunafa in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 20 minutes, or until golden and crispy on top. -
Finish it off:
Remove the tray from the oven and immediately pour the sugar syrup evenly over the hot kunafa. Let it soak in for a few minutes. -
Garnish:
Drizzle the top with melted chocolate and sprinkle crushed pistachios over it. -
Serve:
Cut into squares and serve warm. The melted chocolate, crisp kunafa, and creamy center will delight every bite.
Chocolate Kunafa is more than a dessert—it’s a celebration of tradition reimagined. The contrast between crunchy and creamy, sweet and rich, makes it a perfect treat to serve guests or enjoy with loved ones during special moments.
