Combined with chocolate, the cake also supports heart health by aiding in blood vessel dilation, reducing the risk of stroke and atherosclerosis. In addition, it’s packed with essential minerals like iron, zinc, potassium, sodium, and calcium—nutrients that support bone density, prevent anemia, and boost overall vitality.
Ingredients for Chocolate Orange Cake (Serves 8):
-
2 whole oranges
-
6 eggs
-
1½ cups of sugar
-
2 cups of all-purpose flour
-
½ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
-
1 teaspoon of baking powder
-
½ teaspoon of baking soda
-
½ teaspoon of salt
-
¾ cup of chocolate chips
-
1 tablespoon of honey
-
3 tablespoons of butter
-
1 tablespoon of orange zest
How to Make Chocolate Orange Cake:
Start by placing the whole oranges (unpeeled) in a pot of water. Boil them over medium heat for about one hour until they become soft. Once done, remove them from the water and allow them to cool completely.
Once the oranges are cooled, blend them thoroughly into a smooth purée—seeds removed.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the orange purée with the eggs, cocoa powder, sugar, flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Mix well using an electric mixer or whisk until the batter is smooth and well incorporated.
Pour the batter into a greased cake pan and smooth the top. Bake in a preheated oven at 175°C (350°F) for about one hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
While the cake is cooling, prepare the chocolate glaze. In a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over simmering water), melt the chocolate chips, butter, and honey together. Stir continuously until the glaze becomes smooth and silky.
Once the cake has cooled, pour the glaze evenly over the top. Garnish with freshly grated orange zest for a burst of color and citrus aroma.
Slice and serve. Every piece offers a luxurious bite that balances the richness of chocolate with the brightness of orange—a refreshing twist on a timeless classic.
Whether served with coffee, tea, or on its own, this Chocolate Orange Cake promises to delight and uplift every time.
