Italian Tiramisu – Classic Recipe and Preparation Guide

A Beloved Dessert from the Heart of Italian Cuisine

Italian tiramisu is one of the most iconic and delightful desserts offered by the rich and flavorful Italian kitchen. The word "tiramisu" in Italian literally means “pick me up”, a reference to its ability to lift the mood and bring joy with every bite. It’s an energy-boosting dessert thanks to its rich calorie content and the variety of beneficial minerals it contains.

Tiramisu is also known for being surprisingly easy to prepare, making it a favorite among home cooks, especially during gatherings and special occasions.

Serves: 4 people

Ingredients for Italian Tiramisu:

Italian Tiramisu

  • 20 pieces of ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi)

  • 1 packet of whipping cream powder

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 can of thick cream (qishta or table cream)

  • ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk

  • 3 tablespoons instant coffee (Nescafé)

  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder

  • ¼ cup water

  • 3 teaspoons of instant coffee (for garnish)

How to Prepare Italian Tiramisu:

Start by preparing the cream mixture. In a large bowl, combine the milk and the whipping cream powder. Beat the mixture until it thickens and becomes creamy.

Add the thick cream (qishta) to the bowl and mix well, followed by the condensed milk. Stir until the entire mixture is smooth and fully combined.

In a separate bowl, mix the water, instant coffee, and cocoa powder. Stir until the coffee dissolves completely.

Prepare your serving dish or tray. Begin by spreading a thin layer of the cream mixture on the bottom of the dish to form a smooth base.

Quickly dip each ladyfinger biscuit into the coffee-cocoa mixture—just enough to moisten but not soak it—then arrange them over the cream layer.

Cover the biscuit layer with another layer of the cream mixture. Repeat the process: dip another batch of ladyfingers and layer them over the cream.

Finish with one final thick layer of cream on top, making sure it fully covers the surface.

Using a fine mesh sieve, dust the top layer with instant coffee powder (or cocoa if preferred) to create a decorative finish.

Refrigerate the tiramisu for at least 2 hours to allow the layers to set and the flavors to meld together.

Once chilled, slice and serve in dessert dishes. Pair with a hot cup of coffee or Nescafé for the full Italian experience.

Buon appetito!
