Pepperoni Pizza – A Classic Favorite with a Fluffy Twist

Pepperoni Pizza – A Classic Favorite with a Fluffy Twist

Pepperoni pizza is one of the most beloved and flavorful types of pizza, known for its rich, savory taste and irresistibly fluffy crust. This version brings out the best of both tradition and taste—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and layered with bold, spicy slices of sausage.

Though pizza is globally associated with Italy, its roots trace back to ancient Mediterranean civilizations like Greece and Turkey. From there, it evolved and reached its iconic form in Naples, which remains the undisputed pizza capital of the world.

But beyond its deliciousness, pepperoni pizza also offers several surprising health benefits. Thanks to its tomato-based sauce, it can help protect against certain types of cancer, including skin cancer, and may also offer some defense against sun damage. Tomatoes are packed with antioxidants such as lycopene, which support heart health, protect the brain from cognitive decline (like Alzheimer’s), and even support prostate health.

This dish is also rich in essential minerals such as iron—important for producing and maintaining healthy red blood cells—and calcium, which strengthens bones and teeth. The fiber in the crust and vegetables aids digestion, preventing constipation, while the inclusion of vitamins C, B, and K contributes to immune system support and overall vitality.

Ingredients for Pepperoni Pizza (Serves 4):

Pepperoni Pizza

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon sugar

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast

For the Topping:

  • ½ cup pizza sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil

  • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)

  • 15 slices of cooked pepperoni sausage

  • 100g shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese

  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to Prepare Pepperoni Pizza:

Begin by activating the yeast. In a small bowl, mix the sugar, yeast, and two tablespoons of warm water. Let it sit for 15 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Next, combine the yeast mixture with the flour, salt, olive oil, and the remaining water in a mixer or by hand. Knead until a soft, elastic dough forms.

Shape the dough into a ball, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rest for about an hour until it doubles in size.

Once rested, sprinkle flour on a smooth surface and roll out the dough into a round shape. Transfer it to a lightly greased pizza tray. Brush the surface with olive oil.

Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the red chili flakes (if using), followed by the shredded cheese, pepperoni slices, and chopped basil.

Bake in a preheated oven at 230°C (about 450°F) for 15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.

Remove from the oven, slice, and serve hot. The result is a comforting, flavor-packed pizza that brings people together—one delicious bite at a time.
