Pizza Roll – Recipe & Cooking Instructions
Pizza Roll is a unique variation of traditional pizza, distinguished by its rolled shape that wraps all the delicious ingredients inside. Unlike classic round pizzas, the roll style offers a fun, compact, and satisfying bite with every slice.
While this particular form of pizza is relatively new, pizza itself dates back to ancient times, with its origins often attributed to the Greeks. The Romans are believed to have evolved the dish closer to what we know today.
One popular story about the name "Pizza Hut" traces back to 1958, when brothers Dan and Frank Carney opened their first pizza restaurant in the U.S. The building resembled a small hut, and they had room for only eight letters on the sign—hence the now-famous name "Pizza Hut."
Ingredients for Pizza Roll (Serves 8):
For the Dough:
-
3 cups all-purpose flour
-
1 tsp sugar
-
½ tsp salt
-
1 tsp instant yeast
-
½ cup warm milk
For the Filling:
-
5 slices of turkey (or deli-style turkey breast)
-
2 tbsp harissa (or spicy chili paste)
-
2 tbsp pizza sauce
-
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
How to Prepare Pizza Roll:
Begin by preparing the dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Stir the dry ingredients until evenly mixed.
Gradually add the milk and some warm water while stirring continuously, until the dough comes together. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic. Cover and place in a warm area to rise for about one hour or until doubled in size.
Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle.
Spread the pizza sauce evenly across the surface of the dough, followed by a layer of shredded mozzarella and slices of turkey. Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough into a tight log, sealing the edges and ends to prevent the filling from spilling out.
Grease a baking tray with oil to prevent sticking and place the roll seam-side down. Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F).
Bake the roll for about 30 minutes or until it turns golden brown.
Once baked, slice the roll into rounds. Mix the remaining pizza sauce with harissa to serve as a dipping sauce.
Serve warm to friends or family and enjoy the crispy exterior, gooey cheese, and flavorful filling—along with its fun and distinctive look.
