Sushi – Easy Homemade Recipe & Cooking Instructions

Sushi is one of the most iconic dishes of Japanese cuisine and has become a globally loved and widely spread culinary favorite. Traditionally made with ingredients from the Japanese marine environment—especially seaweed—sushi is rich in vitamins and iodine, providing energy and essential nutrients to the body.

In this simplified version, we prepare sushi using familiar and accessible ingredients, avoiding traditional seaweed, which may not appeal to everyone, especially in Arab countries.

This recipe serves 4 people.


Ingredients:

Sushi

 

  • 1 cup medium-grain rice

  • Fish fillet (used as a substitute for seaweed and to give a seafood flavor)

  • 1 cucumber

  • 1 bell pepper

  • Soy sauce

  • 2 tsp ginger (grated or ground)

  • 1 tsp fish seasoning

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp lemon juice

  • 2 tsp white vinegar

  • 1 tsp curry powder

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 small avocado

  • 2 tbsp olive oil


How to Prepare Sushi:

Start by soaking the rice in water for 15 minutes. Rinse it several times until the water runs clear—this helps remove starch and allows it to better absorb flavor.

Cook the rice as usual but with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Once done, mix in the white vinegar and sugar, then cover and let it rest for about 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.

Meanwhile, cut the fish fillet into long, thin strips. Marinate it with 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt. Let it rest for 10 minutes to soak up the flavors.

Slice the cucumber, bell pepper, and avocado into thin, long strips.

In a pan, add soy sauce, fish seasoning, curry powder, ginger, 1 tablespoon olive oil, and lemon juice. Stir in the sliced vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes over medium heat.

Place the marinated fish fillet slices on a baking tray and grill them in the oven for about 5 minutes until just cooked. Once done, mix the grilled fillet with the prepared vegetable mixture.

Next, lay out a sheet of aluminum foil on a clean flat surface. Spread the cooked rice over it in a rectangular shape.

On top of the rice, add a layer of the fish and vegetable mixture. Carefully roll everything up using the foil to form a tight sushi roll. Because the rice is sticky, the roll will hold its shape well.

Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into round slices about 5 cm thick.

Remove the foil and place the sushi pieces on a serving dish.

You can serve the sushi with a side of yogurt or mayonnaise for dipping.
