Chickpea Fatteh with Yogurt – Recipe and Preparation Method
Chickpea fatteh with yogurt is a quick and flavorful dish, considered one of the most popular traditional meals in the Levant, especially in Syria and Lebanon, before spreading to other Arab countries.
Fatteh is often served as a main breakfast dish on Fridays. It is highly nutritious thanks to its wholesome ingredients. Chickpeas, the star of the dish, are an excellent source of protein and dietary fiber, which help support heart health. They also contain essential minerals like iron, phosphorus, and copper.
Tahini, another key ingredient, offers additional benefits: it helps prevent blood clots, keeps blood pressure within healthy limits, and supports people with arthritis.
This dish also includes cashews and pine nuts, which provide energy and are rich in protein. Cashews, in particular, are powerful antioxidants and play an important role in reducing cancer risks.
Ingredients for Chickpea Fatteh with Yogurt:
-
2 cups of chickpeas (washed and soaked overnight before cooking)
-
1 cup of plain yogurt
-
¾ cup of tahini
-
2 cloves of garlic
-
A small amount of salt
-
A pinch of cumin
-
Bread (cut into pieces and fried)
-
A handful of cashews (for garnish)
-
A handful of pine nuts (for garnish)
Preparation Method:
-
Boil the chickpeas and set aside the cooking water.
-
Prepare the fatteh sauce by blending together the yogurt, tahini, garlic, salt, cumin, ½ cup of chickpea cooking water, and ½ cup of whole chickpeas until smooth and well combined.
-
Fry the bread pieces in oil until golden brown and set aside.
-
Place the fried bread in a serving dish and drizzle with some of the chickpea cooking water to soften it. Add part of the prepared sauce and mix so the bread absorbs the flavors.
-
Pour the remaining sauce on top, garnish with roasted cashews and pine nuts, and serve immediately.
This rich, creamy, and hearty dish is best enjoyed fresh with family for an authentic taste of Levantine tradition.
