Chocolate Baklava – Recipe & Cooking Method

Chocolate baklava is one of the most famous and beloved Eastern desserts, originally tracing back to Turkish cuisine during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid. According to culinary tales, it was his cook “Walat” who first created this pastry. At that time, it didn’t include chocolate. The Sultan, upon seeing the dish, is said to have remarked in Turkish dialect: “Baq la wa ne baydi” – meaning, “Look what Wa made!” Thus, the dessert became known as baklava.

Over the centuries, baklava passed through Syrian and Greek kitchens, undergoing many transformations. One of its modern variations is the chocolate baklava we know today.

This dessert is not only delicious but also rich in benefits. It provides the body with a high level of energy thanks to its calorie-dense ingredients. However, for people on a diet, it should be eaten in moderation. Chocolate also plays a role in widening blood vessels and supporting heart health, while at the same time boosting mood and happiness.

Traditionally, baklava is considered a staple sweet in Eastern cuisine, often prepared during celebrations and festive occasions.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6):

Chocolate Baklava

  • 1 cup honey

  • 1 cup butter

  • 1 cup chopped hazelnuts

  • 1 ½ cups Nutella

  • 500 g phyllo pastry sheets

Preparation Method:

  1. First, prepare the phyllo sheets, covering them with a damp cloth to prevent drying. Grease a baking tray with butter to keep the pastry from sticking.

  2. Brush five phyllo sheets with butter, one by one, layering them in the tray. Spread ½ cup Nutella and ¼ cup honey on top – this forms the first layer.

  3. Repeat the process with six buttered phyllo sheets, then add another ½ cup Nutella and ¼ cup honey – creating the second layer.

  4. For the third layer, repeat the process with buttered sheets, but this time without adding Nutella or honey.

  5. Cut the tray into twelve squares, then slice each square in half to form twenty-four triangles. Brush the top with butter, sprinkle with hazelnuts, and bake until golden brown.

  6. Once baked, remove from the oven and drizzle with the remaining honey. Let it cool for about two hours, then decorate with the leftover Nutella in thin stripes.

Serve it to your family and enjoy the rich, delightful taste of chocolate baklava.
