Chocolate Hazelnut Toffee – Recipe & Preparation

Chocolate Hazelnut Toffee – Recipe & Preparation

Chocolate hazelnut toffee is a classic sweet treat enjoyed worldwide. Known for its irresistible flavor and easy preparation, it has become a favorite dessert for gatherings and celebrations.

The word toffee comes from the Latin-inspired term tofin, which refers to “ultimate delight”—a fitting description of this rich, sugary confection. Originating in Europe, this dessert quickly spread across the globe, becoming a staple of homemade sweets.

High in calories, toffee provides a quick energy boost. However, it should be eaten in moderation, especially by those on diets or managing weight. To give perspective, 100 g of toffee contains about 559 calories, 21 g of saturated fat, 1.2 g of unsaturated fat, 104 mg of cholesterol, 51 mg of potassium, and 65 g of sugar.

Despite its richness, it does offer benefits: it supports heart health, provides antioxidants that may protect against cancer, widens blood vessels, and supplies essential vitamins and minerals.

Ingredients (Serves 8):

Chocolate Hazelnut Toffee

  • 2 cups melted butter

  • 2 cups sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups grated dark chocolate

  • 1 cup crushed hazelnuts

  • ½ cup dried shredded coconut

Preparation Method:

  1. Make the caramel base: Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the sugar, and stir well. Place over heat and cook until the mixture boils and turns into caramel.

  2. Prepare the base layer: Pour the caramel into a baking tray lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

  3. Prepare the chocolate layer: Melt the dark chocolate in a hot water bath (double boiler). Once smooth, stir in the shredded coconut until well combined.

  4. Assemble: Pour the chocolate-coconut mixture over the caramel layer in the tray. Spread evenly.

  5. Garnish: Sprinkle the crushed hazelnuts generously over the surface.

  6. Finish: Allow the toffee to cool completely. Once set, cut into even squares and serve.

The result is a crunchy, chocolatey, nutty delight that combines caramel richness with the perfect bite of hazelnut.
