Sadd El-Hanak (Mouth Blocker Dessert) – Recipe

Sadd El-Hanak is a rich and filling Middle Eastern dessert with a name that humorously reflects how heavy it feels after eating it—it often leaves you wanting to rest in silence afterward.

Despite its heaviness, it’s packed with nutrients and energy, making it perfect for cold winter days. When prepared with nuts, it becomes even richer in protein and vitamins. Due to its high calorie content, it’s best consumed in moderation, especially for those on a strict diet.

This recipe serves 8–10 people.

Ingredients

Sadd El-Hanak (Mouth Blocker Dessert)

  • 2 tablespoons soft ghee

  • 1½ cups flour

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup fresh liquid milk

For garnish:

  • 2 tablespoons raisins

  • 2 tablespoons mixed nuts (pistachios, almonds, cashews)

  • 4 tablespoons shredded coconut

Preparation

  1. In a medium-sized pot, melt the ghee over low heat.

  2. Gradually add the flour, stirring constantly, and rub it into the ghee until it forms a cohesive dough.

  3. Once the flour turns golden, gradually add the sugar and continue to toast the mixture while stirring, allowing the sugar to melt and caramelize slightly.

  4. Pour in the milk and mix well to form a smooth, cohesive dough.

  5. While the mixture is still hot and firm, shape it using a spoon or press it into a cake mold lightly dusted with cornstarch to prevent sticking.

  6. Let it rest in the mold for about 10 minutes to hold its shape, then gently remove and place on a serving plate.

  7. Garnish with shredded coconut and nuts, and serve alongside a glass of fresh juice.

Note:
For best results, add ingredients gradually. Adding everything at once may cause the flour and milk to clump.
