Shrimp Rice – A Flavorful Gulf-Style Dish That Everyone Loves!

Shrimp rice is a beloved dish across the Gulf countries—and for good reason! Shrimp is one of the most widely available and consumed types of seafood around the world, and it’s packed with flavor, nutrients, and health benefits.

Not only does shrimp help fight depression, regulate heart rhythm, and protect against Alzheimer’s disease, but it’s also rich in essential vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D, both of which support brain and bone health.

This dish serves 4 people and brings together the comforting warmth of rice with the rich, spiced flavor of perfectly seasoned and fried shrimp.

Ingredients

Shrimp Rice

For the Shrimp:

  • 300g shrimp (peeled and cleaned)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 medium egg

  • 1 large onion (for flavor, optional)

  • 1 cup flour

  • Oil for deep frying

For the Rice:

  • 2 cups basmati rice

  • 1 tbsp salt

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 1 tbsp toasted pine nuts (or any nuts you prefer, for garnish)

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 1 tbsp ground ginger

  • 1 tsp crushed chili flakes

  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced

  • ⅓ cup soy sauce

How to Make Shrimp Rice

Step 1: Marinate and Fry the Shrimp
Start by seasoning the shrimp. In a large bowl, mix the salt, cumin, paprika, and black pepper. Add the egg and stir to combine with the spices.

Now toss the shrimp into the mixture and make sure each piece is well-coated.

Next, roll each shrimp in the flour until fully covered. Meanwhile, heat a generous amount of oil in a deep frying pan.

Fry the shrimp until golden and crispy. Once done, transfer them to paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Step 2: Cook the Rice
In a medium saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add the basmati rice and stir gently for a minute.

Then, pour in 3 cups of hot water and a tablespoon of salt. Cover the pot, reduce the heat to low, and let the rice cook until fully tender and fluffy.

Step 3: Prepare the Sauce
While the rice cooks, make the flavorful sauce.

In a deep skillet, heat 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and stir until golden.

Add the ground ginger and chili flakes, stirring briefly to release their aroma.

Then add the fried shrimp to the pan and stir gently to coat with the spices. After about 3 minutes, pour in the soy sauce and give everything a final gentle stir.

Step 4: Combine and Serve
Once the rice has fully absorbed the water, transfer it to a large serving dish.

Pour the shrimp and sauce mixture over the rice and carefully toss everything together to combine the flavors.

Sprinkle with toasted pine nuts or your favorite nuts for an added crunch and elegant finish.

Serve hot—and enjoy this delicious Gulf-style shrimp rice with your loved ones. Bon appétit!
